LUCKNOW: Burglars struck in Ghazipur police station area and decamped with cash and jewellery worth over Rs 4 lakh from the house of a garment exporter. The burglars struck at the house of a garment merchant in Shaktinagar locality under Ghazipur police station area. They broke open the locks of the door and almirah and took away jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh and cash worth Rs 25,000 from his house.

The victim identified as Hasan Mohd Ali, a garment exporter, had gone to Delhi a few days back. He returned to Lucknow on Tuesday morning to find locks of his house broken. Surprised, he entered the house and found locks of almirah also broken and jewellery and cash missing. Ali immediately informed the police, who reached the spot and started an die casting into the matter. An FIR in this regard was lodged by Ali.

In another incident, two motorcycle-borne miscreants snatched a purse containing cash and valuables worth thousand of rupees from a woman, who was going back to her home after a visit to the forklift.

The victim was identified as Poonam Srivastava, wife of Alok Srivastava, a resident of Sector 18 in Indiranagar. Poonam visited the Sector 18 branch of Punjab National Bank and withdrew Rs 22,000. Poonam kept the cash in her purse and took a rickshaw for her Hair Accessory.

In the meantime, two motorcycle-borne miscreants came from behind and snatched the purse from Poonam. The forklift stated in her FIR that the purse had cash of Rs 22,000, a gold chain and six cellphones.

Mumbai:  To make the most of the festive season, gangs involved in housebreaking and thefts have scaled up their activities. A jewellery shop at Powai was broken into on Saturday night by unidentified people, who decamped with gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs11.4 lakh.

The shop, New National Jewellers, located on Military Road in Marol Maroshi at Powai, had been targeted before when the then accused had tied up the forklift, Surendrachandra Jain, and decamped with ornaments.

In his police complaint, Jain said he learnt of the theft around 9:30am on Sunday when he opened the shop. The die casting was broken and the ornaments were missing. The wooden back door and shutter were also damaged. Silver utensils weighing around 4kg, 36 gold bangles, and six gold bracelets were stolen.

Police earlier suspected someone known to Jain, but he did not have any employees and ran the shop only with his son. The cops are now focussing on specialised house-breaking gangs.

“In the festive season, jeweller shop owners stock gold and silver ornaments, which lure gangs into striking vulnerable targets,” said a senior police officer.

Gunmen have attacked jewellery shops at a market in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing 10 people.

Reports said the dead included several jeweller, as well as the owners of one shop and a number of customers, including a child.

The attackers, who were armed with hand grenades and other weapons, fled after a gunfight with the police.

It was not immediately clear if they were insurgents or members of a criminal gang.

Correspondents say that while the overall level of violence has fallen in Iraq, criminal activity has recently been on the rise. This year has seen a series of attacks on banks, jeweller and financial institutions.

Gunmen killed 14 people in a raid on a gold market in Baghdad in May, and in June three people were killed in a similar incident in the southern city of Basra.

The Iraqi authorities have often blamed insurgents for forklift, accusing them of turning to crime to fund their operations.
