Wedding Dress - This week, I said my own sad farewell to Alexander McQueen. No, the fact that the designer passed away months ago hadn’t escaped me. But his figure-hugging (OK, too-tight) going-away dress that I bought last summer on a wave of newly-engaged optimism has. It’s been consigned to a pile of impulse buys and never-worns, because, wait for it, it’s now too big. Comically so. McQueen may have been avant-garde, but I think even he would have shuddered if I’d shimmied off to Amalfi on my honeymoon in a mink-coloured jacquard tent.
I suppose I should have sensed my wedding dress workout was working last week when my fiancé and I were greeted like long-lost children at our favourite local Italian restaurant. They actually said: “Now we can stop worrying.” Has it really been that long since we’ve allowed ourselves their oozing melanzane? Were we really eating out that much before? Back home, a quick inventory of the kitchen told the rest of the Wedding Dress Lace: unopened cheese, biscuits, pesto, bottles of wine and a lingering gift of Lindt chocolates. It seems I have a new weapon called willpower.

Prompt business payment can benefit the buyer as well as the supplierWhen I began Operation Wedding Dress five weeks ago, with the aim of losing a stone and feeling fitter and healthier to start my married life, I was dubious about whether it would work. On the surface, I’m sure I seemed eager – not least because Tom Marien, my trainer from One Element, was so positive about the task in hand, that I felt I should reciprocate. But, knowing my errant ways, I privately expected it was a one-way ticket to disappointment and that I’d hate every minute of the journey. I envisioned a 10-week PE lesson from hell. But after five weeks of what I can only describe as a sustained shock to my system – intense personal training and gym workouts – I’m buzzing.
The curious thing, though, is that in terms of my weight goal, the finish line is still quite blurry. I’ve lost five and a half pounds, which doesn’t seem a lot considering I’ve been sweating through four hours of intense exercise a week. When my weight plateaued in the third and fourth week, I clutched at Tom’s reassurances that drinking a litre of water during a session adds a couple of pounds on the scales. After a few weigh-ins like that, though, I wondered what I was doing wrong. Suddenly, my heavy ponytail was in line for the chop.
But at the same time, my shape was changing – there’s definition on my abs, my jeans are falling down at the back, and that annoying bra-strap overspill is gone – and I was feeling stronger and, oddly, taller than before. Tom thinks I was so “deconditioned” when we started, partly from a serious shoulder and back injury and a subsequent avoidance of movement (never mind exercise), that my Wedding Dress Bridal Gowns had atrophied and weren’t responding properly. He explained that when they started “behaving”, they would retain water, making me heavier for a while. I was reminded to focus on the long-term goal, and embrace the fact that my old “thinner” clothes were fitting again.
I also kept telling myself that the point of this exercise was to do things slowly, properly, avoid the extreme measures that so many brides resort to, and make a sustainable life change. I contented myself with feeling alert, peppy, and bizarrely keen to keep going with the sit-ups and split squats. Then, at the end of last week, the scales began to swing my way. Now, every time I go back to the gym they’re inching in the right direction.
If I needed any more reassurance that I’m doing this the sane way, however slowly, the tiny woman sitting next to me on the train the other night, bridal shopping bags in tow, talking about her Slimfast plans did the trick.
I’m not depriving myself, or feeling weak with hunger while trying to pedal through full-time work and all the after-work effort that organising a wedding abroad requires. Despite having more on my plate than at any other time in my adult life, I’m feeling calm – removing the temptation to match stress with snacks. Deliciously, a friend who told me that she got over a bout of man trouble partly by laughing at the thought of my circuit training has asked for my trainer’s number – not for a date, but because she can see how this process has affected my confidence.
Having a trainer is a luxury, I know. At first, just saying “My trainer says…” made me feel spoilt. But now, I think that it’s a priceless investment in wellbeing. Having someone on my side to say “Great effort; let’s do 10 more” has coaxed me through the first few weeks of uncertainty. I’m realising that my fear of exercise was just a total lack of confidence. I’m no longer intimidated by the gym or the honed bodies that inhabit it; I know, for the first time, what I’m doing. Tom has devised several gym plans for me, combining core and conditioning exercises, for when I go by myself (see left), and having structure and a goal for each session, rather than hoping for the best on the cross-trainer, makes it more rewarding.
So, I’m already ticking off the feelgood part of my mission. But will I reach my target weight? Apparently I have a few more weeks of fat-burning workouts before we move into the toning phase that will sculpt my arms for the dress, and perhaps allow me to lie by the pool on our honeymoon without taking refuge in a sarong. The clock is ticking.
My fiancé arrived home last night spluttering that the gym had emailed him a reminder that he’s getting married in a couple of months. How did they know, and what business of theirs was it anyway? I’m relieved I started early. However, my hen weekend approaches, so I’ll soon see what my new resolve is made of.

Wedding Dress — The Grande Gallery was the scene of the History Museum’s “Wedding Gowns through the Ages” show Saturday afternoon, which featured gowns from 1876 to 1998.
Models for the dresses were Julie Stewart, Michaela Rennick, Gretchen Schrock, Denise Pullen, Jill McClintock, Julie Bennett, Taylor Arnold, Sydney Stewart, Carrie Dotson, Cindy Pepmeyer and Mary Gavin.
“It was really nerve-racking,” model Julie Bennett said. At the beginning of the show she was shaking, though by the end she became more comfortable and ended up having fun.
Trying on the older wedding dresses was “like going back in time,” she said. She was amazed at how well some of the older Wedding Dress held up, not having any rips and the material still good.
One of the gowns Bennett modeled was Mary Moore’s, who was married 52 years ago, in 1958. It was the first time Moore had taken her Evening Dress out since her wedding day. Before lending it to the Historical Society, she tried it on. As she did so, she replayed her entire wedding day.
“It was fun to reminisce,” she said.
During the show Dixie Jenks, organizer of the event, told various stories related to her by the women who originally wore some of the dresses. One woman’s fiance planned their Bridesmaid Wedding Dress date in February so it would fall in between the busy times of having litters of pigs. One bride’s fiance chose her after having first dated her twin sister. During the 1950s, another bride’s family paid $36 for the reception, $40 for the flowers, and the soon-to-be-husband had $29 in his bank account.
Jenks also related some of the women’s advice to newlyweds, some of which included always remembering why you married him and not expecting to have everything your parents had right away.
